Carol's story: "I know he feels happy and fulfilled."

Brother and Sister sit smiling at Care Home

Carol reveals her relief after her brother, Barry, moved into a care home.

Carol Shiner, 73, had been concerned about her brother Barry, age 80, for years.

Barry was struggling with his communication and had very particular dietary needs, but Carol was finally prompted to consider moving Barry into Sanctuary Care’s Castlecroft Care Home in Birmingham after he after he suffered a further decline in his health.

Although Carol knew she had to find alternative care for her brother, she was worried about him living in a care home, but she has since found that the home’s care for Barry has transformed both of their lives.

Carol said: “It was a really emotional time. When I visited Castlecroft, I was in bits but as soon as I walked through the doors, I felt like the home “hugged” me. It still does.”

Carol added: “I’ve seen such an improvement in Barry’s communication. Barry had become so quiet and reserved and was very fussy about his food. He would only have mashed potato and soft food. He didn't want tablets. He was hard work, which made me really nervous. But the team at the home soon got to know him!”

Carol continued: “Since moving into the care home, Barry has become so much more confident and expressive. Friends and family who have known him for years are amazed by the change they’ve seen in him.

“Now, Barry loves taking part in the games club and often helps with the gardening. The staff are so patient and attentive. They treat Barry and I like we are part of their own family and have been able to encourage my brother to step out of his comfort zone.

“The team are constantly updating me on Barry’s day and making sure I know he feels happy and fulfilled. I am so grateful for that.”

“The nurturing environment, attentive staff, and strong sense of community within the care home has not only enriched Barry's life but has made me feel at peace for the first time in 30 years. I don't worry about Barry anymore because I know he's being cared for here. And that's the first time that I can honestly say that.”
