Bunga named Carer of the Year at national awards

Bunga Gurden with her National Care Award for Carer of the Year

An inspirational 62-year-old carer from our care home in Peterculter is celebrating after winning the Carer of the Year award in the annual National Care Awards, hosted by television presenter, Kate Garraway.

Bunga Gurden, a Care Assistant at our Birch House Care Home in Aberdeenshire, has won the prestigious award, which recognises “the vital role” of care assistants in providing quality care.

Originally from Thailand, Bunga has worked at the home for over seven years, providing care for adults aged 28 to 88 living with a range of learning disabilities, neurological and degenerative conditions.

The 62-year-old grandmother has been commended for going above and beyond to ensure that residents in the not-for-profit care home have a sense of purpose, belonging and achievement. Bunga instinctively understands the residents, several of whom can’t communicate verbally.

Bunga commented:

“I was over the moon when they called my name, I’m so happy! My category was the first one to be called and I was so surprised and excited to hear my name. I feel very proud, honoured and am very grateful.”

Bunga enriches the lives of her residents through organising special activities, which range from supporting them to attend community dances and discos, to pamper sessions, using her holistic skills as a trained reflexologist to enhance residents’ mental and physical wellbeing.

The selfless carer even recently supported a resident to fulfil their lifelong wish to fly on a plane and visit the home of the royal family. Bunga flew with the resident to London to visit iconic sightseeing locations including Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, The Shard, Tower Bridge, and Madame Tussauds.

Pat Hutchison, care home manager at Birch House, said: “Bunga’s energy and enthusiasm is infectious. She has brought a remarkable, positive transformation to the lives of our residents, always ensuring they feel happy and fulfilled.

“Bunga is incredibly kind and we feel extremely lucky to have her on our team. We’re thrilled to see that her dedication and commitment has been recognised on a national scale.”
