Birchwood Court Residential Care Home
Situated in the mining village of Easington Colliery, the team at Birchwood Court Care Home are what makes our home truly special. Some have been with us for over 10 years, giving our Peterlee care home a really warm family feel.
Situated next door to Sanctuary Care’s Ashwood Park home, we provide residential and dementia care, as well as respite care.
Life at our care home in Peterlee
We are proud to support our residents to have a very active role in how their home is run and decisions that are made. Our resident ambassadors do everything from welcoming new residents to interviewing potential staff.
Enriching lives is at the heart of everything we do, and we are proud to support our residents to do the things they love to do. We have a minibus for trips out into the community in Easington, to local garden centres and the seaside at Seaham.
Our vintage Corner Café is a step back in time, with bunting, fine china and tiered cake stands. It’s the perfect place to relax with family and friends and enjoy private family celebrations.
We have a hairdressing salon, for weekly pampering with our hairdresser and an old-fashioned pub ‘The Birchwood Arms’, with authentic bar furniture, a jukebox and darts board. In our games room there is a pool table and giant skittles!
Birchwood Court also has a cinema room, with a big screen, projector and popcorn machine for movie nights, with our resident ‘usher’ handing out tickets!

What is the food like at Birchwood Court Care Home?
Residents at our Peterlee care home enjoy home-cooking, with head chef Linda, who has been with us for over 15 years, serving delicious meals in our dining room. Whether a traditional English breakfast, roast dinner with all the trimmings, or something lighter, mealtimes are a special part of the day. And each day for afternoon tea, there are home-baked cakes or biscuits.
Proud of our community connections
Our residents are proud to have wonderful connections to the community outside their care home in Peterlee. We regularly welcome students from East Durham College for work experience. In addition to entertainers and musicians, our very own ‘Mr Motivator’ joins us for twice monthly exercise sessions, which can be tailored for our residents with greater physical disabilities.
Every month we welcome a special guest from our local church in Easington Colliery along for a service, along with dog Maggie for pet therapy sessions. These are especially therapeutic for our residents living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. And children from the local primary school, whom we have a pen pal scheme with, also join us for singalongs and baking.
Looking for respite care?
As well as providing residential and dementia care, we also offer respite care breaks at our Peterlee residential care home.
For example, if you are a caregiver and need a light break from looking after an elderly relative, we are here, so you can relax knowing they are in safe hands while you take a well-deserved break yourself.
Our respite breaks also provide residents with the opportunity to see if residential care home living could be for them; with home-cooked meals, round the clock care, company from our team and like-minded people and, a whole host of engaging activities to enjoy.
Looking for respite care in Peterlee?
As well as providing residential and dementia care, we also offer respite care breaks, which can be pre-booked in advance. For example, if you are a caregiver and need a light break from looking after an elderly relative, we are here, so you can relax knowing they are in safe hands while you take a well-deserved break yourself.
Pricing information
It is usual for residents in care homes to contribute to the cost of their own care. Some people have the resources to pay for this in full, whilst others make means-tested contributions.
Our weekly fees are individual to each of our residents and are subject to a pre-admission assessment, which is required to understand the level of care and support needed. Our 2024 weekly care fees for residential care start from £1070 but may be in the region of 30% more*. This depends on your care needs and the type of bedroom that is right for you, from our standard rooms through to our premium bedroom options.
*If you require more specialist care such as 1-2-1 support, your weekly fee could be higher.
