Here, at Sanctuary Care, we currently have two care homes in Tyne and Wear – Dovecote in the old mining village of High Spen, and Pavillion in Houghton-le-Spring. Our teams provide residential, dementia, nursing, palliative and respite care for elderly people in the region.
Tyne and Wear is a county renowned for its rich industrial heritage – with former coal mining towns and villages, one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution, Newcastle, and, of course, Sunderland, which was once the world’s shipbuilding capital.
High Spen and Houghton-le-Spring are examples of the former, having been home to collieries in the 20th century. A picturesque little village, High Spen is surrounded by stretches of stunning countryside. It’s also just a short distance from Chopwell Wood – a 360-hectare woodland featuring trails for all to enjoy.
Just a short distance away from Sunderland, Houghton-le-Spring is home to the spectacular Penshaw Monument, an ancient Greek-style temple, and Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve – a peaceful spot for life’s quieter moments.
Do you or your loved one need some extra support? Both of our homes provide residential care in Tyne and Wear. Dovecote and Pavillion have a ‘home from home’ feel, where senior residents can get tailored support from compassionate carers. There doesn’t have to be a complex care need – we can support in a number of different ways, whether it’s basic mobility assistance, help with bathing or simply just having someone to talk to.
We pride ourselves on enriching the lives of our residents through engaging activities and coomfortable facilities. Our homes provide a safe environment in which people can thrive alongside others with similar interests and from a similar generation during their senior years.
Dovecote and Pavillion offer person-centred dementia care in Tyne and Wear. We take an approach that considers the individual as well as their condition. We work to learn about our residents affected by dementia and other memory-related conditions – their life experiences, personalities and interests. It’s this that helps us to create a care plan that meets their exact requirements.
The devoted teams across both of our care homes in Tyne and Wear pride themselves on helping residents to live comfortably with their conditions. They regularly plan and host engaging activities designed to stimulate the senses and the brain, such as reminiscence therapy. We understand how challenging the dementia journey can be for the loved ones of those affected – we’re there for families, every step of the way, helping them to develop a better understanding of dementia.
Are you a primary care provider for a loved one, and in need of a short break from your duties? Both of our care homes in the region can provide short or long-term respite care for elderly people. During a stay at one of our homes, your loved one will be able to receive the same level of care they’d normally receive while you take a well-earned rest.
Respite care breaks are also valuable in that they allow care recipients to have a change of scenery. Here, at Sanctuary, we’re proud of the warm and welcoming care home environments we’ve created. Short-term residents will be able to get involved in our engaging activities, benefit from wonderful facilities and get to know our permanent residents and carers. It’s the perfect taster of care home life.
Pavillion in Houghton-le-Spring also provides nursing care for elderly individuals living with greater health needs. We have professionally trained nurses and nursing associates there, round the clock, to provide care that’s bespoke to individual health needs. This support can take the form of assistance during mealtimes with PEG feeding tubes or administering medicine, for example.
A peaceful setting, the home allows residents to feel comfortable, while being free to take part in activities and enjoy the companionship of their fellow residents. We look to bring all the comforts of home to them.
Here, at Sanctuary, we understand how challenging the aftermath of a terminal diagnosis can be – for the individual and their loved ones. We’re here to support at every step. Pavillion Residential and Nursing Home provides end of life care with compassion and kindness. Our approach blends nursing care delivered to a high standard in an environment that remains homely.
Our care plans are bespoke to individuals, treating not just a person’s medical condition, but also considering their physical comfort, as well as their emotional, mental and spiritual needs. For some, palliative care can be received for a number of years – we always record the personal preferences of our residents when it comes to their future care.
