“It’s lovely to see her enjoying life” – why Basingfield Court is home for Mary

When Caroline was faced with the decision of finding a care home for her mother Mary, she also experienced strong feelings of guilt.

Fast forward to today and she couldn’t be happier after finding Basingfield Court Residential Care Home in Basingstoke, where Mary is living life to the full.

Mary, who lives with dementia, recently had a hospital appointment and Caroline explains how desperate she was to return home. 

“All she wanted was to come back to Basingfield Court, she missed the staff so much,” she explains. “She said ‘don’t let anyone take my home away’ – it’s her home and she loves it there.” 

And for Caroline, she also feels a true sense of belonging when she visits, often accompanied by her dog.

“It’s like going into my own family home,” she says. “The residents smile and wave, I can hear things going on, it’s warm and comfortable.

“The staff are lovely and nothing is ever too much trouble – it’s a home and that’s what I love about it. It genuinely feels like a family that we, as residents’ relatives, are welcomed into.”

An enriched life for Mary

Caroline recalls a special moment when she felt truly content, knowing she’d made the right choice.

“Mum and I were sat down, and a lovely resident came and joined us. They were talking about where they grew up, not far from each other and the good old days and she was laughing. It’s lovely to see her enjoying life – she’s happy there.” 

For Caroline, she feels so reassured by Mary’s care, she and her husband have booked a cruise, their first foreign holiday in four years!

“We couldn’t have done that before, but now I can because I’m not worried about leaving her. She is genuinely happy, and I am going to enjoy a lovely holiday.”
