“Our residents are like a family away from home” – nurse Mercy’s story

When Mercy moved to England from the Philippines as part of Sanctuary Care’s Overseas Recruitment Programme she didn’t realise that her residents would become like an extended family.

Joining the team at Rowanweald Residential and Nursing Home in Harrow Weald, Mercy was later joined by husband Neil, who is a care assistant.

“I believe it is my calling to be a nurse. My residents are like a family away from home – and their families have given us their trust to care for them,” she says.  “I’m very proud and happy.”

And when Mercy misses her family in the Philippines, she only needs to think of her residents, which gives her such a sense of belonging.

“They are like an extended family, and I treat them as I would my own parents and family members. It’s about caring and giving your heart, promoting their quality of life.”

Mercy has been a nurse for over 10 years and worked in Dubai seven of those. When she embarked on the process of coming to England as part of our Overseas Recruitment Programme, she was overwhelmed by how much support she received, especially when it came to her OSCE exam, which is required to work here.  

“I felt so supported by Sanctuary Care. They organised everything and I didn’t have to stress about anything and could just focus on my exam.”
