Ex aircraft engineer on cloud 9 after taking to the skies

David Auld beams with joy as he enjoys a flight simulator experience with wife Jean and two staff from Queens Care Home in South Ayrshire

Former aircraft engineer, 89-year-old resident David Auld, took to the skies on a flight simulator as he relived past glories.

David, a resident at Queens Care Home in South Ayrshire, and his wife Jean, embarked on an incredible flight simulation experience at Ascent Aviation in Linwood, bringing back the golden days of his career with Air Canada.

David’s extraordinary journey back to the skies was made possible through the generosity of the home’s beautician, Claire Kirkby, who gifted a special voucher, which was due to expire, to the home.

His time with Air Canada allowed him to travel the world, creating memories that he fondly recalls today. The team at Ascent Aviation recreated a near-perfect simulation of a Boeing jumbo jet which had taken David to New York, Toronto and Rome. Not only this, but this incredible experience enabled David to fly to Toronto where his daughter lives, to pay her a 'virtual' visit.

At the culmination of his flight, David received a flight certificate, commemorating the incredible day.

The home’s support worker, Tracey Jones, who helped to organise the day commented: “It was amazing to support David to take part in this aviation stimulation, which was an incredible experience for both himself and Jean.’

“Our team are passionate about enriching our residents’ lives especially through activities like these, which are so important to give our residents a sense of continuity and achievement.”

David commented: “It was terrific!” as he received his certificate, smiling from ear to ear.
