Young volunteer Zimo is our shining star!

Volunteer playing Flute

A talented young musician from Oxford, 15-year-old Zimo, has been recognised for his kindness and dedication to volunteering as part of ITV Good Morning Britain’s ‘1 Million Minutes’ campaign.

Since 2023, Zimo has been volunteering weekly at our Iffley Residential and Nursing Home in Oxfordshire.

Every Tuesday after school, Zimo visits the residents to play games like chess and scrabble, to chat and socialise, and has formed many wonderful connections.

At the weekends and in the school holidays, he organises concerts for the residents and their loved ones, often with his friends accompanying him on different musical instruments.

Zimo, whose hero is the Chinese pianist Lang Lang, said:
“I was inspired to volunteer at our local care home by the passing of my great-great grandmother. I really enjoy spending time with the residents, they have so much life experience and great stories to share!

“During my time as a volunteer, I’ve learnt that those who care for the elderly are the hidden heroes in society. I would love to encourage other young people to donate their time, as I believe the smallest things, if done often enough, can make the greatest difference to the world.”

Sharon Wassing, Iffley’s home manager, added: “Zimo brings so much joy to our residents and our care home team. Not only is he incredibly dedicated, thoughtful and warm-hearted, but he is also extremely talented.

“When Zimo performs, you can see our residents’ faces light up. It’s more than just entertainment - it’s a powerful way of unlocking past memories and sparking conversation.”
