Sue’s final and fitting official duty
Sue Tolman’s last official duty as Portreeve of Callington was to officially open the first dementia coffee morning at our Chyvarhas Care Home.
Having worked as a carer in the nursing home for eleven years, the event could not have provided a more fitting finale to Councillor Tolman’s term as Mayor.
“It was the best job I ever had,” she said. “I left in 1999 to qualify as a teacher but the staff and residents here were like family. It’s wonderful to come back and I love the refurbishment that has been going on.”
After cutting the ribbon to the bright airy room that is being used for what will now become a regular event on the third Friday of every month, Sue joined those attending for light refreshments and a chat about the importance of getting together and sharing experiences.
Meanwhile Michael Dickinson-Smith, Chyvarhas home manager said: “It’s so important for carers to talk to each other in a safe space, especially those trying to look after a loved one at home.”
The next dementia coffee morning at Chyvarhas will take place on Friday 16 June from 10am to midday. The event is free and there’s no need to book.
Chyvarhas in Callington, previously owned by Cornwall Care, is now part of not-for-profit Sanctuary Care.
