“I can go on holiday and have my respite knowing mum is happy” – Laura’s story

We meet Laura, who pre-books respite care breaks for her mother Geraldine four times at year at our Haven Residential Care Home in Pinner, Middlesex.

Laura cares for Geraldine, who lives with dementia, at home and loves how, despite only having a handful of respite breaks there each year, how well the team know Geraldine’s every need.

Laura explains: “From the first time we came to look at this home, home manager Peter made such a big fuss of mum. Mum doesn’t want to be in a ‘care home’ so he will say to her ‘when are you coming for your next break in our hotel’?

“Even though she only comes here on respite four times a year, he’s learnt everything that he needs to know about mum and filters this down to his team really well, so everyone knows what mum’s needs are – from what she likes to drink to her personal care.”

For Laura it’s knowing that she can take a short break herself, with the peace of mind of knowing Geraldine is happy and receiving fantastic care at Haven.

“I can pop in any time I like – there’s always is a consistently high level of care,” she adds. “The carers are attentive and they know their residents/clients and their needs.

“It’s great because I can go on holiday, and everything is less stressful – and I can have my respite knowing mum is happy.”
