Keith is going for gold! Decorated athlete competes in care home sports day

Keith, a care home resident at Trevarna in Cornwall, proudly displays his medals following the care home's own version of the summer games

Sanctuary Care home resident, Keith Adams, aged 80, has inspired residents and carers to get involved in the 2024 Summer Games by hosting their own sports day at Trevarna Residential and Nursing Home in Cornwall.

Holding dozens of medals and accolades to his name, Mr Adams, is an accomplished athlete who’s sporting achievements include running, rowing and horse racing.

Throughout his impressive career, Mr Adams was an endurance competitor for the British Horse Society; ran multiple marathons including the London Marathon (twice); Paris Marathon and the Great North Run; and was an 1988 Indoor Rowing Medallist. He also holds lifeguard qualifications and spent a week crewing on the Malcom Miller Tall Ship.

To celebrate the start of the 2024 Summer Games, Mr Adams competed in the Trevarna Sports Day, which saw residents participate in a range of fun sports, including table tennis and basketball. Not only was everyone buzzing from feel-good endorphins from getting active, but their sense of community hugely increased.

The sports day is the latest in a series of events held by Sanctuary Care homes to provide residents the opportunity to continue the hobbies they enjoyed before moving into care and for others to try something totally different.

Kerry-Ann Lake, Trevarna Residential and Nursing Home’s manager, said: “It was wonderful to see so many of our residents take part in this special sports day to mark the start of the 2024 Summer Games, especially Mr Adams! One of our passions at Sanctuary Care is providing residents with a feeling of continuity, so they can carry on pursuing their interests when they join us. It’s so important to us that our residents continue to live the lives they have always had and this sports day is a great demonstration of how much fun these activities can be.”

Mr Adams said: “I was delighted to take part in Trevarna Residential and Nursing Home’s sports day - it was great fun and I've won more medals!”
