“Making our residents smile means the world to me” Sherry’s 24 years at Don Thomson House

When Sherry started work at our Don Thomson House in Harwich as a carer, she never imagined she would love it so much that she’d still be here over two decades later!

However, the team leader couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. And she has a number of colleagues who feel the same, having been at the home for over 20 years.

“I just love caring for people and satisfaction you get, it’s just a lovely feeling,” she explains.

“I love that it’s a small home which feels like a family – we really are like one big happy family. The residents mean the world to me – you build up such a lovely rapport with them and their families too. We love to have a laugh and a joke, that’s what they enjoy!

“Don Thomson House is such a nice, happy home to work in. I love it when I arrive in the mornings and the residents are so pleased to you - their faces’ light up when you walk in.”

Enriching lives each and every day

For Sherry, working at Don Thomson House gives her such a sense of belonging and achievement.

“When you go home you know you’ve put a smile on your residents’ faces, and that means the world to me,” she adds.

When asked what advice she would give to anyone considering a role in care Sherry, who is a grandmother of two, says: “If you love caring for people then give it a go, because it’s just the most wonderful feeling and you get such great job satisfaction.”
