Meet volunteer Zoe, part of our family at The Beeches

Zoe, our volunteer at The Beeches Residential Care Home, our care home in Northfield, Birmingham

The residents and team at The Beeches Residential Care Home have thanked dedicated volunteer, who was born with Down Syndrome, for her amazing support.

Since 2018, Zoe has volunteered at our care home in Northfield, Birmingham, helping with everything from person-centred activities to supporting with cake competitions!

Coming in three days a week, 28-year-old Zoe even gives up her time on Christmas Day to take part in festivities with our residents, giving her such a sense of belonging and achievement.

Zoe is challenging the perception that people with a learning disability cannot do certain things and has become a much-loved member of the team who is adored by our residents.

Ada Pearson, who is 97 explains: “Zoe is just lovely; she always greets us with a big cuddle. She even paints my nails for me!”

And Zoe’s mum Debbie adds: “Volunteering has changed Zoe’s life. Since joining Sanctuary Care, she has flourished and is much more confident - it’s been fantastic to see.”

Michelle Pilgrim, our home manager, described Zoe as an “inspiration”. “Zoe is a bundle of joy to have in our home; she’s caring, enthusiastic, and attentive. Our team, who feel more like a family, are devoted to enriching the lives of our residents, their families, and the community. Zoe’s selflessness, hard work and dedication is a shining example of this.”

At Sanctuary Care we are proud to welcome community volunteers into our homes to support with a range of flexible volunteering and work experience placements, from befriending and gardening to driving and clerical support.

Part of our commitment to enriching our residents’ lives, ensuring they feel content, happy and fulfilled, our volunteering scheme also gives people in our local communities a taste of a career in care, while building up their skills and confidence.
