“They are like my family of mums and dads” – meet Toni

When Toni wanted a change of career, something special drew her to Lammas House, our Outstanding-rated care home in Coventry. Now, 15 years later she loves every day there just as much as her first!
“It was as if I had always been here,” she explains. “It felt so natural and straight away I fell in love with my job.
“The residents and the staff all mean the world to me. It’s hard to put into words how special it is.
“I love the joy and excitement that I get from being here every day.”
At the age of 69, Toni, who was orphaned at 15, said she can’t bear to think of retiring.
“I wanted to care for the residents in the way I would have liked to have been able to care for my mum and dad had they been alive,” she explains. “They are like my family of mums and dads.”
Toni, who is now a grandmother of five, works as a care assistant and activities co-ordinator at Lammas House, which is the only Outstanding-rated home in Coventry. She is passionate about supporting the residents to take part in experiences which bring them joy.
“I love to make the residents smile and helping them to feel fulfilled and active,” she adds.
And Toni is passionate about the residents doing things they love to do, from deciding what songs to perform in their Lammas Ladies Choir, to sharing their skills and much-loved hobbies.
“The things the residents remember are amazing – I’m learning something new every day – even at my age!”
