Luke’s career Kickstart with Sanctuary Care

Luke Harrison, who works at The Laurels Residential and Nursing Home in Derby

Meet 22-year-old Luke Harrison, who is celebrating securing a permanent role at one of our care homes in Derby, having thrived during a six-month work placement.

Luke joined the Laurels Residential and Nursing Home in Spondon in July as part of the Kickstart scheme, a national initiative to give young people vital employability skills.

Having cared for his elderly grandparents, Luke was naturally drawn to a career in care and loved it so much, he’s successfully secured a permanent role as a care assistant!

He says: “I really enjoy looking after the residents. Seeing a smile on their faces is really rewarding and it makes me feel very happy knowing I’ve helped them.”

Talking about his recruitment success he adds: “I feel very accomplished and proud, I’m so happy that I’ve got the job.”

And of his colleagues Luke adds: “I really appreciate how they’ve really supported me and helped me.”

Activities coordinator Becky Slack said: “Luke is fantastic with the residents – he is a lovely young man and a valued member of our team.”

What is the Kickstart scheme?

Kickstart was introduced by the Government for employers to provide six-month work placements for people aged between 16 and 24, although Sanctuary offered placements, which are Government-funded, to 18–24-year-olds. It provides them with vital employability training, such as interview skills and CV writing.
