Thanks to respite care, Sarah could finally get that much-needed holiday
Sharing caring responsibilities for both elderly parents can make it difficult to take a break – Sarah reveals how respite care at our Rowanweald care home enabled her to have a much-needed holiday.
Sarah and her two brothers share caring for their parents Arthur and Evelyn, both of whom live with dementia. But with at least two people now needed to support them (Evelyn is almost immobile) it’s challenging to juggle care if they need a break.
Having searched for care homes which also provide nursing and dementia care, they discovered our Rowanweald Residential and Nursing Home in Harrow Weald, and pre-booked a three week stay for their parents.
Finally, Sarah could take her covid-postponed holiday to Lanzarote with her husband and visit family in Devon, while her brothers could enjoy a golfing trip together and even get to a wedding of a friend.
“I was ecstatic when we finally managed to get respite care,” Sarah explains. “It was such a relief to go on holiday. It was so chilled, it was just lovely – a real tonic!”
The respite break has actually now been extended for Evelyn and Arthur, who enjoys taking part in music sessions and gentle exercise at the home.
“Dad was a musician all his working life, playing the classical clarinet, and he’s never happier than when he is listening to music, so it is lovely that the staff make sure there is always classical music playing for him,” Sarah adds.
“The staff are absolutely lovely – they are very caring.”
