Ann’s passion for volunteering
When Ann first moved into our care home in Prestwick, she hadn’t imagined life could still be so fulfilling. Fast forward a year and she’s been day-time clubbing, enjoyed a caravan holiday with her fellow residents and now volunteers at a local charity shop.
As soon as she moved into Queens Care Home in 2023, the team were dedicated to discovering what Ann loves spending her time doing and what brings her joy – her eye for fashion and desire to retain her independence shone through.
The team got in touch with the local British Red Cross and now Ann, accompanied by a member of the Queens team, volunteers at their local charity shop every Friday.
Home manager Jackie Gordon says: “At Queens Care Home we are passionate about creating opportunities for our residents, who are a huge part of a community to which they still very much belong.
“Ann loves to help others and volunteering gives her a great sense of purpose and achievement. She sees lots of old friends who pop into the shop and have a chat, and she loves helping the customers and meeting new people.”
Ann, who is 81 years old, says: “I love spending time with other people and chatting to the community. I like to keep busy and enjoy being with the public.”
Having completed her induction, Ann spends time sorting and pricing the donations. She loves dressing the shop window, accessorising the mannequins and arranging the clothing displays.
After her shift has finished, Ann and the home’s support worker, Tracey, go for a coffee and a cake at Ann’s favourite coffee shop.
Jackie adds: “Ann really looks forward to volunteering. She also loves a bargain and often buys items for herself when she’s there. For her to have this role is wonderful for her independence and brings her such joy.”
